Fart Song

Meet Jose Cruz. In the long history of American jurisprudence, the West Virginia man may be the first defendant to ever be charged with passing gas in the face of a law enforcement officer. Cruz, 34, was driving with his car's headlights off Monday night when he was pulled over by West Charleston cops, who noted that Cruz appeared to be intoxicated. After failing a series of field sobriety tests, Cruz was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he allegedly committed another offense, according to a September 23 criminal complaint (a copy of which you can find here). While being fingerprinted, Cruz allegedly "lifted his leg and passed gas loudly on Ptlm. Parsons. The defendant then fanned the air with his hand in front of his rear onto" the cop. "The gas," the complaint notes, "was very odorous and created contact of an insulting or provoking nature with Ptlm. Parsons." In addition to the DUI count, Cruz was also charged with battery on a police officer for the farting incident. Cruz is currently being held in a Charleston jail on the misdemeanor charges.

A Scottish letter carrier working in Frankfurt hoarded at least 20,000 letters at home because he felt his work was too taxing, the police said Tuesday. The postal worker was caught when a neighbor saw him tipping a bag of mail into a garbage bin and alerted the police. “It’s worth mentioning the 23-year-old didn’t deliver mail addressed to himself either,” the police said in a statement. Investigators found garbage bags and boxes full of letters and other mail stashed around the man’s apartment and basement. He told the police that he had gotten behind with deliveries because of night school studies and felt too overtaxed to catch up.

An elephant that became addicted to heroin at the hands of illegal traders will return home after three years of rehabilitation, the Chinese state media said Thursday. The elephant, Xiguang, a 4-year-old male, became addicted after the traders captured him on the China-Myanmar border in March 2005. They fed him bananas laced with heroin as bait and to pacify him, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. When he was found two months later in southwest China, he was suffering from withdrawal. He received methadone at a center on Hainan Island and recovered, Xinhua said.
