The dancer becomes posessed as the beating drums gradually get louder and faster.Practiced as a healing ritual to cleanse the soul mainly in the southern rural parts of Egypt and Sudan it was shunned by the religious establishment as pagan and inciting the jinns. It survived as a subculture and is still practiced today.
