Once upon a time you dressed so fine, you threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?

Stephanie St. Clair was a black French woman born in Martinique and immigrated to America in 1912. She became a gangster in Harlem, New York City in the early 20th Century. Known as Madame St. Clair, she ran one of the leading numbers games. She was strong-armed out of the business by Dutch Schultz (Arthur Fleggenheim) when he lost his Brooklyn boot-legging operations and wanted more territory. She had nothing to do with his mob-contracted murder but is most remembered for sending a revengefully-worded telegram to his hospital as he lay delirious from multiple and fatal gun-shot wounds in 193 that said “As ye sow, so shall you reap.”
